It is a difficult tightrope to walk when producing art that is 'of the moment' yet acknowledges its past. Only a certain type of artist can concoct the perfect blend -- modern, yet non-alienating, traditional yet not anachronistic. Such an artist is Arthur Blythe, who JazzTimes Magazine called, "the magic figure of reconciliation, the force for consensus, that modern jazz has been looking for in vain since the death of John Coltrane in 1967." Arthur has put together an ensemble, unusual in its instrumentation, unique in its tone color. Gust William Tsilis on concert grand marimba in place of piano, and Bob Stewart's tuba in place of the more usual string bass together with Arthur's biting alto sax and Cecil Brooks III's propulsive drumming all contribute to a recording which will certainly place Arthur Blythe firmly in the epicenter of modern jazz. - from Savant Records website

Altoist Arthur Blythe has always loved to play in unusual instrumental settings. His soulful sound and adventurous style are quite flexible and they sound right at home in this set with Gust William Tsilis on bass marimba, Bob Stewart on tuba, and drummer Cecil Brooks III. The performances are lyrical and often melodic, but searching and unpredictable. Blythe contributed eight of the dozen songs (including "Opus 1," "My Son Ra," and "Bubbles") in addition to digging into "C.C. Rider," Thelonious Monk's obscure "Children's Song," "Stuffy Turkey," and "In a Sentimental Mood." In grooves ranging from New Orleans to R&B-ish, along with freer explorations, this is a continually colorful set of high-quality music. - Scott Yanow, All Music

Focus sounds like it could have been conceived and recorded by some of the new crop of ”downtown” musicians. The spare instrumentation and simple, elegant compositions sound fresh, relevant and forward-looking. But there's also a patina of maturity and self-assuredness that sets Focus apart from rawer, more experimental downtown sounds. That's because the musicians - supported on some tracks by special guest William Tsilis on concert grand marimba - have arrived at their maturity and self-assuredness through decades of experimental efforts. They've spent careers redefining jazz, and the fruits of their labor result in music that is relaxed and understated, yet emotive and powerful. - Jon Wagner, All About Jazz
