"The versatile and imaginative drummer/composer Michael Stephans brings together three generations of Miles Davis alumni (Dave Liebman, Bennie Maupin, and Munyungo Jackson), and one of the jazz world's most distinctive bassists (Scott Colley) to create a series of evocative interpretations of Jewish liturgical and popular music, in addition to Stephans' own compositions, written especially for this recording. ...Stephans emphasizes that OM/shalOM is not a collection of jazz interpretations of Jewish hymns and songs; nor is it related in any way to Klezmer music. It contains elements of jazz, folk music, free improvisation, and contemporary classical music. Here you will find some great post-bop playing, a tango, a Viennese-like waltz, a New Orleans strut, a burning Calypso trio (featuring Liebman, Jackson, and Stephans), a startling and poignant wooden flute solo by Liebman, a beautiful bass clarinet and piano duo by Maupin and Liebman, and many other sonic delicacies throughout."

“This sensational group is an intriguing meeting point of Jewish melodies with mid- to late-period Coltrane”
-- Laurence Donahue-Greene, ALL ABOUT JAZZ, New York

“I am impressed with the spiritual vibe at the center. At 75+ minutes, there are too many gems to mention here, but I must admit that this is one of the best treasures of Jewish melodies that I have ever heard.”
-- Bruce Lee Gallanter, DOWNTOWN MUSIC GALLERY
