Phil Markowitz, a veteran on the international Jazz scene, presents “Catalysis”, a new studio recording dedicated to realizing the full potential of improvisational music within the jazz idiom. Phil can currently be heard with the all-star "Saxophone Summit" (Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman, Ravi Coltrane, and, formerly, the late great Michael Brecker), but his credentials span a cornucopia of jazz; from the traditional to the avant-garde; from his early associations with Chet Baker and Toots Thielemans, through his continuing long-term affiliations with Bob Mintzer and David Liebman.
On “Catalysis”, Markowitz unites with eminent New York heavyweights Adam Nussbaum (ace drummer with John Scofield, James Moody, John Abercrombie) and Jay Anderson (celebrated bassist with the Maria Schneider Orchestra, Joe Sample, and Paul Bley), in an extraordinarily progressive musical setting, performing Markowitz’s compositions, which range from hard-cutting, swinging chromaticism to the most lyrical post-romantic ballads.
Inventive, virtuosic, and accessible, this trio presents a forward-looking vision for contemporary music.
