Don Preston Trio
"Transformation"

Cryptogramophone- CG107( 2001)
file under: Post Bop, West Coast Jazz

Alex Cline - drums
Don Preston - piano
Joel Hamilton - bass

This new CD by the Don Preston Trio features pianist Preston, bassist Joel Hamilton and drummer Alex Cline presenting inventive treatments of music by Frank Zappa, Carla Bley, John Carter, Cole Porter, and Don himself. Transformation presents a survey Preston's multifarious career: his stint as keyboardist with Frank Zappa's Mothers Of Invention, his association with pianist-composer Carla Bley, his synthesizer work for the late distinguished composer-clarinetist John Carter as well as his own reputation as a writer of powerful though twisted music.

"Preston's roots are deep in jazz. What was interesting was that Preston not only brought his skewed piano sensibility into the creative jazz context, but that he lugged along a little of his zany synthesizer as well. Transformation is something of a catalogue raisonné for Preston, touching on all these associations (Carla and Paul Bley, John Carter, Zappa and Cole Porter), showing what he can do twisting a standard around and delving a bit into his own compositional bag as well. Preston resides on the edge of tonality, toying with it." - John Corbett, DownBeat, April 2001

"The opportunity to hear Preston ruminate in a trio setting on Transformation, revisiting choice moments of weirdness and glory, as well as dig into original works and unlikely standards, is not to be missed. The range of program is somewhat camouflaged by the seamless interply of Preston, bassist Joel Hamilton and drummer Alex Cline. They possess a cohesion born of fluidity that is reminiscent of Paul Bley’s 60’s trios, but they have their own crisp edge. It is a high common denominator for such a diverse program." - Bill Shoemaker, JazzTimes, May 2001
